It's not a myth. I did my MEP at the now defunct Leeds Flying School. There were regular waits at holding points for inbound aircraft before take off, up to 15 or 20 minutes at busy times. Orbits on downwind are also common for the same reason. Having said that I enjoyed the experience of a larger, controlled airfield.

The situation was better when the cross runway was in use, but when it closed it was wait wait wait, crosswind take off, wait wait wait, crosswind landing!
