Got it this time.
Not exactly how I thought it worked, indeed.
Regardless, it is still true (or even more so) that an autoslat fail warning light having anything to do what the slats not extending (at least to mid possition) or the flaps not extending (to 11º) is unlikely.
The investigation hasn't conclude if the slats were set or not, only that it is very likely that the flaps were at 0º, so the slats could've still indeed be out.
Still, taking off with flaps 0º while having done the calculations for 11º still can put the airplane in a configuration where it could potentially enter stall on adverse conditons, even with the slats (theoretically) out.
