Get a repellent and a mosquito net. There are no mosquitoes during a day when it's hot, be careful at night. When you go to sleep, spray your room with a repellent and leave for a bout 10-15 minutes and keep Air conditioning on full blast in your room at all times. Hang a net over the bed.
Don't walk around in shorts and sandals and spray yourself. And ask somebody before you go outside the hotel or compound about safety.
Africa is actually very pretty and fun.
