744 HKG-JFK (Just an odd question)

No real point to this post, just curious about something...

A friend that flies for UAL was telling me the other day that CX used to fly the 744 HKG-JFK nonstop back in the 90's. Is that true? Data I've looked at says the 744 can fly 7,260nm and it is something like 7,080nm on this leg. What did you do if there were headwinds of any significance? Was there a standard refueling stop?
