Keg,
I wonder how the numbers stack up in terms of profit per available seats? Is this a quick and dirty way of assessing 'yield' or am I way off the mark?
Y A320s and Z A330s is X seats. Divide the profit by that to work out how much they were making per seat. Do the same for QF fleets and we have a profit per seat number.
Mate I think that airline cost & revenue comparisons are done on an available seat kilometers (or miles) basis. That is, you're trying to equilibrate (say) purely short-haul ops by Ryanair (nothing much over 4 hours) against long (eg. Air Tahiti Nui, all long hops) or a mix within a group (eg. our esteemed national carrier).
Wikipedia on ASMs. I'm sure you could simply do the same maths with the profit number.
