Everything depends on your background. The venerable Trevor Thom books might be a good choice for non-technical types, but I'd say they are way too verbose for an engineer. For a succinct and up-to-the-point one-volume review, try
JAR Private Pilot Studies by Phil Croucher. He has also written a similar book for Canadian PPL.
