I would suggest trying Prestwick to get some experience. It's where lots of type rating touch-and-gos take place as it's in Class D airspace, has full ATC and big runways. Yet it is also home to a nice flying club (not the one beside the Tower) where GA parking is very cheap and they're all especially friendly.
