Royal Brunei have been 'no smoking' for the last few years, and have never provided booze either for free or on sale.
We get very few incidents of pax having a crafty fag even on 10 hours sectors Brunei - Jeddah.
If you want to bring a couple of cans of beer or a bottle of wine or spirit on board to drink en route, that's fine. The crew will (space permitting) put them in the chilly bin for you, they will provide you with a glass and a bottle opener. They will not pour it for you.
Interestingly enough, surprisingly few passengers do go to the effort to bring their own booze with them.
Perhaps this system enhances the idea of a nice glass of wine with your meal, or even a cold beer to relax after the stress involved in checking in, Passport Control etc before the flight.
Perhaps it also deters people drinking only because it is on the Cabin Crew's trolly right next to them and it is (perceived as) free.
As far as Air Rage goes, I thought current opinion was that Air Rage usually starts long before a pax boards a flight; stressful traffic jams, long check in queues, unhelpful staff, a hard day at work and so on. Booze might be the final straw that makes a potential Air Rage go off the deep end, but not usually the original reason behind the event.
