Considering "air rage" in isolation is probably misleading. It has grown exponentially with "road rage" and other formes of rage. The public, most notably the British public, seem to be more inclined to let it hang out, when reticence was once the watchword.
A man who is subjected to the smallest inconvenience or check on one of our highways now submits to the urge to get out of his car, wave his arms around like a Frenchman, swear in an uninhibited fashion and threaten violence. Nobody will ever ask him whether he ought really to be less childish and exercise a little self-control; suffice to say he was provoked, and felt entitled to react so.
We've been heading this way for decades. Children are now taught to expect instant gratification, and to wail like a baby if they don't get it. They are taught to let their feelings show, not keep it bottled up... bad for you, apparently. Never did me any harm. Gibber).
So being specific about booze and fags might be a red herring. Undoubtedly they are contributory factors, but the solution lies elsewhere.
