Business logic: Buy up the competition and either close it or convert it to a profit-center for yourself.
It could be that Bombardier wants to do one or the other... Boeing bought deHavilland for its design technology, and Bombardier may be doing the reverse: place some enhancements on the Woodford product that make it another world-beater. Same Type Licence, new variant = another chunk of the market.
