Luton to charge for use of a luggage trolley

http://www.sundaymirror.co.uk/news/s...8487-20616833/

Greedy airport bosses are to charge passengers £1 to use a luggage trolley.

It comes on top of a raft of fuel surcharges and other fees that have already left plane-users reeling.

And unlike supermarket trolleys, you won't get your money back.

The new trolleys are to be introduced on July 26 at Luton airport, which is used by more than 10million passengers a year.

A similar scheme was launched at smaller Bristol airport earlier this year.
The Air Transport Users Council - Britain's air passenger watchdog - attacked the new charge. Spokesman James Fremantle said: "This is becoming ridiculous. Airports and airlines are charging for everything these days.

"Elderly people might do themselves a nasty injury if they don't want to pay this fee. This is a step too far - and we would hope other airports do not follow suit."

Passengers also attacked the trolley charges as unjustifiable."

One said: "Once you have paid for your flight, the least you expect is to have a trolley."

The new charges come on top of the Government's airport passenger duty of £10 on short haul flights and £40 on long haul.

Several airlines serving Luton also impose fuel surcharges, baggage check-in fees and charge for sp-called "priority boarding".

The Sunday Mirror revealed last month that Monarch, which uses Luton, now even charges £5 for an in flight blanket.

A Luton airport spokeswoman said: "We are bringing in these charges to improve facilities for passengers."

Bristol airport said: "The popularity of wheeled suitcases is reducing the demand for trolleys. Fewer than five per cent of passengers now use them."
