I'd say it's a better decision than Chambery. Performance wise the Dash 8 300 is limited at Chambery and when combined with poor weather etc. I think it would have been a route with very poor punctuality, resulting in bad publicity. I've heard that Grenoble is a far more viable "commercial" operation.
It's still far better than driving to the likes of Gatwick.
