The CRC check was brought in after 9/11, it was designed to assess the suitability of airside pass holders and if their past criminal activities were an indication of their possible threat to the security of aircraft/passengers etc. It is not a further assessment of your character or part of the interview process.
However that is not to say a person who has to accept your CRC check and give it the ok for your pass to be issued will not exercise their own level of discretion and 'forget' the original reason the CRC was introduced.
As for wearing sandals with socks and still getting a job, the recruiters must of had an off day.
