They said the bomb was actually at Stratford where they are excavating for the Olympic site. They have put an air exclusion zone around the bomb.
Although it is some miles from the airport the SID [Standard Instrument Departure] route flies right over it.
I find this difficult to accept. Outbound aircraft from LCY do indeed normally pass over Stratford at 3,000 feet (which seems way beyond any connection with the round) but then inbound Heathrows pass over them at 4,000 feet and they seem to have been unaffected.
But even if it was closed, was it beyong the wit of all to do a non-standard departure turning left out of LCY. What happens when there is a thunderstorm over Stratford ?
