After removing the wheels, you can also remove the pedal cranks and handlebar stem -- even the fork and seat depending upon available tools, skills and necessity.

When driving a taxi in my uni days, I would bike down to the garage, take off the wheels and put the bike in the trunk. I learned the hard way that a blanket between the wheels and frame would have protected the paint job
