No British government has ever cared about its servicemen. Ask any poor Tom who served in NI or the Feklands. If I recall, they were paid more for being enroute than they were for fighting in sheep **** and misery and some of the Argie kit was Gucci in comparison. As for looking after the damaged when all the hoo ha had died down.
