.. the strafing references confused me too. Even 'as far back' as then, it was accepted as unlawful so was there a mistake in the chap's narrative, was it an example of someone going rogue, the fog of war, someone with an axe to grind or a story to sell, people being just a little home happy.. or what?

This seems dubious;

David Ince, who led one of the aircraft formations, said the RAF pilots had just learned of conditions in the Bergen Belsen concentration camp, newly liberated by British troops, and had no qualms about killing people they thought were Nazis. Other pilots said they flew out with reports ringing in their ears of Allied pilots executed after bailing out over Germany.
I'm not wagging a finger at anyone 65 years on, but what does seem certain is that tactical int wasn't passed on within the RAF. Possibly a tiny error, but one that turned out to have massive consequences.
