Desktop refuses to boot

Hi All,
Number 1 sons desktop is refusing to boot. On switch on it displays an error message saying that windows failed to start up properly and that this may be due to recent hardware or software changes. (we haven't changed anything recently) It then offers 3 options, Start windows normally, Enter Bios or enter safe mode none of which work. No matter which option you select it tries to boot and than after a few seconds it flashes very quickly through a blue screen of death (too quickly to be able to read any of the message) and reverts back to the original error screen. It's a fairly old PC and to be honest I may just buy a new one rather than have it repaired. My main question being is it possible to retrieve his extensive music collection from the hard drive before attempting a repair ?
Thanks in advance.
PS Operating system XP SP2
