Islands need smaller aircraft, shorter cheaper runways and frequency.

I understand what you are saying. The smaller operators are not able to compete with the larger a/c and as a result the frequencies drop.
However, I do think that a weekly flight to Spain would not go a miss from the Island. There are many people on the rock who I am sure will hate passing through LGW/MAN/LTN/BFS etc. when they could fly direct.
Holiday resorts - yes. Regional routes - no.
