w.r.t. mileage claims, my understanding is that HMRC allow 40p per mile. If your employer pays you less, you can claim the difference on your tax return. So if you're getting £50 for STN/LGW/STN you should be able to claim the extra £10... not that 40p/mile is anywhere near the true cost of running even an average car these days!
