WASHINGTON (AFP) — American Airlines said Wednesday it canceled about 200 flights because to inspect MD-80 aircraft to ensure wiring is installed and secured according to a new safety directive.
The carrier, a unit of AMR Corp., said a joint team of American Airlines and Federal Aviation Administration inspectors raised questions about how a certain bundle of wires is secured to the MD-80 aircraft.
The company said the process can take several hours per aircraft. Many inspections have already been completed and the aircraft are currently in service, a statement from the airline said.
"We are in the process of completing the inspections on the remaining airplanes and will return them to service on a rolling basis throughout the day," the largest US carrier said.
The MD-80 is a plane made by the McDonnell Douglas division of Boeing and carries around 140 passengers.
