There are no 'requirements'. You simply have to be able to pass the renewal. How you achieve that is up to you. Isn't that responsibility a refreshing change?
Please don't start talking about 'the rules'. The IMC rating seems to be the one thing that the JAA didn't get their hands on to ruin and make un-economic for private flyers by imposing re-currency 'rules'.

If they did, there wouldn't be much left in the flying budget for actually going anywhere.
