Pyro, my first retractable endorsement was done with Gill Layt in a green Mooney Super 21 VH-MWB. It had a big lever between the two front seats that operated the gear. When the gear was down the lever was upright and locked in under the panel, and when the gear was up the lever locked down between the seats.
VH-MWB was put in the drink off Newcastle in the 70's by a pilot who ran a tank dry and couldn't get it started again quickly.
