I know what you mean, and a lot of people feel the same way, if the growing popularity of the Holga camera is any guide - have a read of
this. It's part of a growing
Lomography trend, for old-style basic cameras.
D&P of anything but standard film is a problem here in Ireland, and I would set up my own B&W darkroom if I had the space for it. As it is, my original digital files are surrogates for negatives, and you don't scribble on negatives.
