Windows Movie Maker

I tried to save a movie to a DVD. I used the video for local playback 2.1mbps NTSC format, which required 2399MB for a disc size of 4.9 GB. Seemed OK, and off it went, took 6 hours then I got an error saying it could not record. All the instructions refer to using a CD-R /RW and do not refer to a DVD. Is it possible to record to a DVD using this program?
Does anyone know of any options? I have a three hour movie that I shot using my Digital camera on a holiday with the kids and I want to record it to a format that allows for playing back on a normal DVD player and TV (NTSC). I don't want the ginky CD option.
I hate Windows.
