What I posted was along the lines of:
Being an ATC Assistant is either a long term career or a stepping stone to becoming an ATCO.
Although quite a few ATC staff are also pilots of various levels, they manage to fit it in because for the most part we have fixed rosters and a reasonable amount of time off and they get the flying work on that basis.
It would be very difficult to be a pilot full time and ATCA/ATCO part time largely because most ATC Providers want to know that forthcoming rosters can be sustained for months in advance and they don't need the tail wagging the dog.
