Post Class 1 Validity

I asked this question a couple of months ago and didn't get any answers, so I'm going to try again.

I have a Class 2 medical, valid for a year, which runs out in January 2001. In July this year, having decided to do a CPL(H), I went to Gatwick to make sure I would be able to get a Class 1; I did, it is valid for 6 months, and also runs out in January 2001.

I will not actually need a Class 1 for at least a year, probably longer. It would be cheaper to renew my class 2 for another year, and renew the Class 1 when I get my CPL and need to. But can I do that, or will it mean I have to go back to Gatwick for another initial Class 1? With the old CAA medicals, apparently that was fine; you could leave it for up to two years. With JAR, no-one seems to know. I asked at Gatwick, and the CAA didn't seem certain!

Does anyone know the answer or know where I can find out; otherwise I'll have to renew my class 1 anyway, expensively and possibly unnecessarily.
