Eric Brown wrote a very good book called Wings of the Luftwaffe, which was a series of flight tests carried out on captured German aircraft, including cutaways and detailed cockpit layouts. I don't have it any more, unfortunately, but I remember him mentioning that in the first accidental Do335 losses, the remains of the pilots were found in the wreckage minus their arms. The canopy jettison handles were attached to the canopy itself and when it was released prior to the pilots bailing out, it took their limbs with it! (Oddly, in view of this oversight, the upper fin and rear propeller were designed to be detached by an explosive charge to prevent injury to the crew when bailing out.)
The Boscombe Down Do335 was lost when a fire started in the rear engine and burned through the empennage control cables before the pilot (Grp Cpt Alan Hards?) could get out.
