Re "rich of stochiometric mixture", yes there are times you NEED to be, and times when you don't NEED to be. Aircraft such as the big piston airliners routinely ran LOP in the cruise as a matter of course. John Deakin covers all the details accompanied with nice colourful graphs. Very educational even if you have no practical use.
Direct injection has been used in aviation engines - Germany was a big user in WWII (Me 109, FW 190), and some of the big P & W radials also.
