However, if he tried that on an aeroplane without such a system (HS125, VC10 and, I believe, BAE146) then a strong crosswind would make for VERY interesting takeoff as he woulkd have no directional control below 60-80kt.

I would put money on him having zero flight time on the VC10, and probably the same for the HS125 series.
