Rule of Thumb...

The average thumb, between the first joint and the end of the thumb, = 10 miles on the 1/2 mil chart. At 100 knots GS, this equals 6 minutes. So 3 'thumbs' = 18 minutes, two 'thumbs' 12 minutes, etc.....
