I'd hate to sound like a stooge, but how many pilots and engineers know how to run a business ? That would be the thinking of those who employ the upper managers.
They know how to manage their respective areas keeping most happy and morale relatively high, but they aren't the slash and burn mechanics employed to strips the guts out of Qantas, as is the current agenda.
