USB connection should work just fine. I've formatted and done all kinds of stuff that way. It's how I back up.
Is it, perchance, a Maxtor drive?
What information do you get if you go to Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management and point to it?
Ditto when it's "not visible"?
Does the "Status" tell you anything about it?
