The spending of money?
I think it is some weird psychological thing that some people have which means they will stop at nothing until they are an airline pilot because of a warped view of what the job is. The flying of a small aircraft goes against what they perceive they should be doing. If they are that way inclined I expect flying a piston as a job would be beneath them as they should be an airline pilot.
