Never flown with boots but always taught that boots should not be operated until a certain amount of ice has built up, otherwise the boot is not able to crack the ice?
Its one of those areas often taught inaccurately in flight schools. It is infact type specific whether to operate boots on detecting any accretion or to operate them only when you have an accretion of a specific depth.
