Indeed, the route is inevitably a goner, at least in the interim between open skies and the 3rd runway.
The use of the service now is only really as a linkage to LHR connections. It is pretty useless as a London link in the face of the train service, so to think that an LGW or similar service will appear afterwards is fanciful IMHO.
