Only really possible out of Perth as flights out of the East Coast are consistently full and you can't get on even with a firm space ticket (and we don't get to use the jump-seat).
Even out of Perth, you have to realize it is not a commuting position. No guarantee of group days off, rotating bidding seniority, lots of shorter sectors mixed in with the long-haul stuff means you won't see him much!
The roads in Dubai are indeed horrific, and the place certainly doesn't suit everyone, but with the right attitude you CAN build a good life-style here.
If, however, commuting is the only option, you would be much better off pursuing an actual commuting position e.g Korean, Air Japan, or one of the Indian carriers.
