Really? When I'm in a 172, if I were in a dead end in a valley, I'd:
1. Power idle.
2. Nose up to slow down, white arc, full flaps.
3. 90 degree bank.
4. Full power.
5. Recover after about 150 degree turn before I stall.
6. Keep a 45 degree bank still.
7. Power to cruise, bring up the flaps.
