If my memory serves me right the situation with regard to the road signs was that the highway agency would not change the signs further afield from the airport in case of confusion with Durham city. Is this still the case? Not sure why anyone would get mixed up with a sign that says Durham and a sign that says Durham Tees Valley Airport with a big aeroplane picture next to it.

Thats right, the problem is that motorists travelling at speed tend to register the first bit of the sign , indicate their intention to turn off then have to jink about the road when they realise that the sign isn't for Durham.Thats the theory anyway.
The re-naming was allegedley at the request of BMI Baby , who then P-off and left the newly renamed establishment in the proverbial. The amusing fact is that at most Spanish Airports the boards invariably still show Teesside as a destination (or Teeside depending on the day)
and for the last summer of their programme , Malagas' Bmi agent was also advertising Teesside flights.
The re-naming was never popular with the people of Teesside , and it is now glaringly apparent that it has done nothing to help increase airport usage, which management were often heard to claim, in the long gone days when they actually believed their own spin.
