I knew a guy who ran a coffee shop and he had being born in Japan during the occupation.
His Dad was assigned to a unit that went around clearing arms out of caves all over Japan. The arms were being stockpiled for the last defence. He told me there were a lot of caves and the mission lasted at least two years.
An invasion would have being horrific. Truman saved many lives.
