If an aircraft drops a boom you may well not hear the noise of its' engines.
May have been aircraft then as we could not see where they were launched from, they just seem to appear in the air.

This may sound like a silly question, but the boom was extremely loud/powerful, does the size of the object hitting the sound barrier dictate the amount of noise produced?
