When I went from Oz to NZ in 1982, my 1981 Commodore S/wagon went over in the hold of the same 747SP into Wellington as I did. I had to remove the front and rear bumber bar, and cut about 150 mm off the exhaust pipe. QF put it on a pallet with the rear wheels about 150 mm higher than the front wheels and slid it sideways into the hold.

I assume QF drained the fuel tank, as I have a vague recollection of having to put some fuel in it to drive it away from the aerodrome.
