You can apply for an employment authorization card while you are awaiting your residency application. This will allow you to work, and there are companies who will hire you with this document. You can apply for advance parole which is a document that will let you leave the country and reenter while awaiting residency also, you can even apply for a parole that will give you multiple reentry privileges, usually good for one year.
