Non-pilot speaking.

On the matter of FDR sampling - and please say if this should be asked elsewhere rather in the thread that has prompted the question.

In the past, FDR units were limited by recording medium in particular. Now that rugged, high capacity data storage is readily available, is there a move to change the sampling rates?

For example, during taxi and cruise, the conventional sampling rates might be sufficient but, during departure and approach, the sampling rates could be doubled? A two second interval reduces to one second and a one second reduces to half a second? The triggers for the change in sampling rates should be fairly simple to define.

I realise, of course, that there would be an enormous time delay from any manufacturer offering this feature and it becoming common, due to the long tail of installed equipment.

The new FDRs could have the capacity for flight deck cameras to be included, the investigation of this event would really benefit from camera evidence.
