Did the student pilot have a transponder?
Without reading the whole thread

Did the student pilot have a transponder?
&
Was he using Flight Information Service?

I'm learning to fly at the moment and at least two training aircraft have no transponder, I'm not going use those aircraft for cross country navigation.
