I heard about the 49ers the first time a few years ago. Having not flown for CX nor in Asia, I did not put too much thought into the subject. It is only after I joined Oasis HK Airlines, that I actually met and flew with quite a few of them. (...and learned quite a few details about the matter and the severity of personal pain, that has been experienced by some of these guys)
Without exception, everyone of those I know is an outstanding airman, very good CRM and thoroughly likeable guys. (That's why they probably got fired in the first place at CX)
Of course, I don't know the other side of the story but I did have the chance to make up my own mind and my conclusion is that CX made a big mistake (IMHO), that will follow them for a long long time.
I almost think, that being a 49er is a qualification, that should yield an advantage during the interview.
