MME Teesside, not a criticism at all but re your point on MME-LHR use of an A319 being too big, its down to BMI that have turned this route into one where an A319 is now too big. I can recall only a few years back a few at BMI telling me this route was one of BMI's most profitable and it was using bigger aircraft than an A319 (apart from the use of a Fokker 100 for a period). A couple of years back you could fly for £48 return, cheapest now is around the £80 mark so they have priced a section of the pax out of the market. With BABY to LGW and the chopping/changing of frequencies and timings on LHR its turned a very profitable domestic route which could take far higher loads of pax to the current aircraft and reduced nos. Its a shame really as BMI/MME's relationship on this route goes back 30-40 years I think and i believe at its height it was five times daily on DC9's/737's.
