I flew to the US in September and booked my tickets through
www.expedia.co.uk which worked out quite well. You could also try
www.travelocity.co.uk . When you type in your departure and destination airports they can sometimes come up with routes and airlines you wouldn't necessarily think of (such as Alitalia from LHR to BOS!). Hope this helps.
