Reminds me of my skills test. On my first leg (no radio nav/GPS allowed, just dead reckoning and visual nav), over very featureless terrain, dodging rain showers all the way. More luck than skill that I ended up over my first turning point. As soon as the examiner allowed it, did a VOR cross bearing to verify that I was indeed where I was supposed to be. Plain sailing from there on.
