Just a long shot - have you recently installed IE7 as this can (in layman's terms) **** up your HP scanner drivers.
Well, more reasonably one could look at this the other way round. HP software is notorious for not following the rules and breaking itself when some perfecly correct update is made to some other part of the system.
I solve this one by not buying any HP kit which involves software.
